KAMLOOPS, British Columbia – Kacey Bellamy '09 won a gold medal as an alternate captain on the U.S. Women's National Team at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship that was held March 28 – April 4.
Sarah Cahill '04 was part of the U.S. staff as a strength and conditioning coach. She has held that position since August 2012.
In four games, Bellamy tallied two assists for two points and a plus/minus rating of +5. The defenseman recorded both points and a +3 rating in the U.S. team's 9-0 victory against Russia in the semifinals. In the four games she played, the Stars and Stripes outscored the opposition 20-1 and ended the tourney with three consecutive shutouts, including a 1-0 overtime victory against Canada in the April 4 gold medal game.
Bellamy and Cahill have been part of three consecutive gold-medal winning teams at the World Championships (2013, 2015, 2016). Bellamy also won gold at the Worlds in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
In 116 career games with the U.S. Women's National Team, Bellamy has compiled seven goals and 39 assists for 46 points. And that includes three points (1g, 2a) in 10 Olympic games (2010 and 2014 Olympiads).
In her four-year career at UNH (2006-09), Bellamy amassed 27 goals and 80 assists for 107 points in 143 games. She ranks third on UNH's leaderboard among defensemen in both assists and points – the school benchmark for points is 108. Bellamy ranked third in the nation in defensemen scoring (0.80 points per game) as a senior en route to being named to the RBK All-America First Team. Her Hockey East accolades included First Team All-Star, Tournament MVP and All-Tournament Team; she was also honored as UNH's Jim Urquhart Student-Athlete of the Year.
Bellamy led UNH to four consecutive Hockey East regular season and tournament titles, as well as four straight appearances in the NCAA tournament with two trips to the Frozen Four. She returned to her alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2010-11 season and served as an assistant coach at Merrimack College this past year.
In addition to her success with USA Hockey, Bellamy led the Boston Pride of the NWHL to the inaugural title this past month. She previously skated professionally for the Boston Blades (CWHL) from 2011-15.
Cahill was a tri-captain on the 2004 UNH women's lacrosse team that advanced to the NCAA Championships after winning the America East conference regular-season and tournament titles. The 17th-ranked Wildcats ended the season with a 15-5 record. Cahill received the team's Coaches' Award, which is presented to an individual who embodies the UNH women's lacrosse philosophies of selfless giving to the team, and she was a repeat selection to the America East All-Conference First Team in 2004.
As part of the Class of 2004, Cahill led UNH to four consecutive appearances in the America East Championships, two regular-season conference titles (2004, 2002), one tournament title (2004) and an NCAA tournament appearance. The team won a school-record 15 games in '04 and had a school-record 14-game winning streak. They also broke – and still hold – the single-season school record for goals and points.
Cahill was the first intern in UNH's strength and conditioning program. Prior to joining USA Hockey, she was a strength and conditioning coach at both Northeastern University and the University of Oklahoma.
