Muses Fifth Double-Double Earns First Conference Win of Year

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior captain Demi Muses (Orangevale, Calif.) finished with a double-double, her fifth of the season and third straight, to lead the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-14) sweep of America East rival University of Maryland, Baltimore County to open conference play at Lundholm Gym.

The first set was a close battle but New Hampshire slowly grew its lead to five, 14-9, halfway through the set. The Wildcats and the Retrievers matched in total kills (11) in the set but UMBC struggled with a 0.024 hitting percentage. With a 2-point lead, 17-15, the Wildcats rattled off six straight points to stretch an 8-point lead late in the set. UMBC was unable to overcome the rally, with five attack errors in the run.
-2nd set-
The Wildcats recorded 15 kills in the second set over UMBC's 11. The period was another close one as no team could rally for more than three points until New Hampshire scored four straight to take a 13-9 lead off of three Retriever errors and a Tanski service ace. The Wildcats put together four, 2-point bursts to hold out for the set-win, 25-18.
-3rd set-
New Hampshire, who earned a .393 hitting percentage in set three – the match high – put its foot to the pedal in the final stanza. With UMBC holding a 6-5 lead, UNH rattled off 5-straight points before the Retrievers scored and followed that with three more points to take a 13-7 lead. UMBC tried to claw back but in the end, the Wildcats finished with the final five points on two kills by Muses and a service ace from freshman Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) to take the match and the first America East game of the season.
