LOS ANGELES – Chris Wingate (Hovik, Norway) of the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team was drafted by the New York City Football Club (NYCFC) Tuesday in the third round of the Major League Soccer Superdraft. He is the first player in program history to be selected in the draft.
"We are so proud of Chris and what he has accomplished thus far. Chris is a model player and person and we look forward to tracking his progress as a professional soccer player. This is a great reflection on where our program is aspiring to and we hope this is the first of many to be drafted out of our program in the future."
Wingate was picked 54th overall after being invited to compete at the MLS Combine. The Combine took place at the StubHub Center in Los Angeles and consisted of games of potential draftees split into teams as well as interviews and physical testing. He is just the third Wildcat to be a part of an MLS program. Wingate's former teammate Travis Worra ('15) signed with D.C. United in February of 2015 and remains a member of the organization while Dan Sirota ('00) was a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2002.
At UNH, Wingate not only excelled on the field in 2016, but also in the classroom. He graduated in December, finishing his degree in Finance & Information Systems/Business Analytics with a grade point average of 3.76. He was named an America East Presidential Scholar Athlete, a CoSIDA Academic All-America and All-District selection and was tabbed to the America East All-Academic Team.
On the pitch, the senior tallied 16 points on four goals and eight assists as he started in 18 of 19 games played. Three of his goals were game winners. He also received a host of post-season accolades, including being named a First Team Senior CLASS Award All-American, an NSCAA All-East Region First Team selection, the America East Midfielder of the Year, an AE All-Conference First Team member and an ECAC Honorable Mention All-Star.
NYCFC plays a friendly match against C.S. Emelec at Estadio Banco Del Pacifico on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. The first official preseason match will be against the New York Red Bulls at Kino North Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m. Follow along at www.nycfc.com.
