Olhava Records Team-High 14 Kills in 3-2 Loss to UMBC

DURHAM, N.H. – Gabri Olhava (Mount Prospect, Ill.) recorded 14 kills on a .379 hitting percentage, but the University of New Hampshire volleyball team was edged 3-2 by University of Maryland, Baltimore County in Friday night's match at Lundholm Gym.
UMBC won all the odd-sets as the final line was 25-21, 19-25, 27-25, 23-25, 15-12.
Mali Jereczek (Green Bay, Wis.) and Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) both recorded a double-double for the second consecutive match. Jereczek tallied 21 assists and 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season, and she also recorded a career-high six service aces. Smith finished with 11 kills and 11 digs for her team-leading eighth double-double of the year.
Logan Welti (Middleton, Wis.) recorded a personal best – and match high – of 34 digs.
UNH is now 8-11 overall and 3-2 in America East. UMBC, which had lost 11 consecutive matches in the series vs. the Wildcats, improved to 11-7, 3-1.

THE DIFFERENCE
- With the match tied at one set apiece, UMBC trailed 24-20 in Set 3 but fought off four set points as part of a 7-1 run to close out the set and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- Trailing 11-7 in the decisive fifth set, UMBC reeled off six consecutive points to go ahead 13-11. A Retrievers' attack error stopped the run, but a Rojas kill and UNH attack error gave the visitors the fifth set (15-12) and the match.
- New Hampshire had an impressive .238 hitting percentage in Set 5, but the visitors were even more impressive at .429 with 10 kills and just one error on 21 attacks.
SET 1
- There were four ties and one lead change in the opening set.
- UMBC built a 10-6 lead before UNH inched within 12-11. The Retrievers won the next two points, however, and the 'Cats never got closer than two points the rest of the way.
SET 2
- There were four ties and two lead changes in the second set.
- An early six-point run gave the visitors an early 6-1 lead.
- UMBC extended the advantage to six points, 11-5, before the Wildcats closed within 11-8.
- UNH trailed 14-10 before a 4-0 spurt leveled the score at 14.
- The teams exchanged points to advance the score to 16-15 in favor of the Retrievers, but the Wildcats won five consecutive points to take a 20-16 lead.
- New Hampshire closed out the set on a 4-1 run.
SET 3
- There were 13 tie scores and four lead changes in the third set.
- Neither team led by more than one point until UNH won five consecutive points to build a 15-10 lead.
- UMBC responded with a 5-0 run of its own to forge a 15-15 tie.
- The 'Cats won six of the next seven points to surge ahead 21-16 and, moments later, a Courtney Bowman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) kill made it 24-20.
- Back to back UNH errors, then consecutive Rojas kill and another Wildcat error put the Retrievers back in front, 25-24.
- The Wildcats fended off that set point, but then another combination of a Rojas kill and New Hampshire attack error ended the set, 26-24, in favor of the visitors.
SET 4
- There were 11 ties and two lead changes in the fourth set.
- New Hampshire erased a 14-10 deficit by winning four straight points.
- UMBC responded with a 3-0 spurt to go back in front, 17-14.
- Trailing 21-19, UNH went on a 4-0 run – kills by Ohava and Emily Tanski (Plymouth, Mich.) coupled with two UMBC errors – to take a 23-21 lead.
- The Retrievers called time out and won the next two points to level the score at 23, but Smith recorded a kill and combined with Molly Wotton (Dover, N.H.) on a block to end the set and level the match at two sets apiece.
SET 5
- There were five tie scores and two lead changes in the decisive set.
- UMBC took an early 5-3 lead, but the 'Cats reeled off five consecutive points, including kills by Bowman and Wotton sandwiched around a pair of Jereczek service aces, to build an 8-5 advantage.
- UNH extended the advantage to 11-7 before the Retrievers won six consecutive points to surge ahead 13-11 and move within two points of winning the match.
- A solo block by Bowman ended the run, but Rojas' kill moved the Retreviers within one point of victory and then a Wildcat attack error ended the match.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- New Hampshire is now 5-1 at home this season; the loss ended a 13-match home win streak.
- The Wildcats had won 11 straight home conference matches dating back to November 2015.
- UNH has a 20-10 lifetime record against UMBC.
