Leissner's Double-Double Paces 'Cats Past Wheelock, 95-39, in Opener

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior forward and captain Tanner Leissner (Converse, Texas) recorded game highs in both points (22) and rebounds (14) to lead the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team to Friday afternoon's 95-39 season-opening victory against Wheelock College at Lundholm Gym.
Leissner recorded his 15th career double-double in just 21 minutes; he made 10 of 15 field goal attempts and was a perfect 2-for-2 at the foul line, and Leissner also had one block and one steal.
Jacoby Armstrong (Dallas, Texas), who redshirted the 2016-17 season, shot 8 of 9 from the floor to score 16 points in 13 minutes.
Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) and Iba Camara (Dakar, Senegal) also scored in double digits with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

THE DIFFERENCE
- New Hampshire shot 56.1% (39-75) from the floor in comparison to Wheelock's 32.0% (13-52), and UNH recorded a 52-29 rebounding advantage. The home Wildcats committed 12 turnovers, almost half of the visiting Wildcats' 23.
- UNH converted the rebounding advantage, which included 17-7 on the offensive glass, into a 24-3 edge in second-chance points.
- The home 'Cats outscored the visitors 64-12 in the paint.
GAME RECAP
- Armstrong scored the first points of the game on a layup 18 seconds into the game and UNH led wire-to-wire.
- New Hampshire led 10-5 at the first media timeout (at 15:59) and quickly extended the advantage to 19-5 (15:08) on another Armstrong layup, three-point play by Leissner, Elijah Jordan (Orlando, Fla.) layup and Armstrong dunk.
- Wheelock hit double digits with 9:39 remaining in the first half to make the score 32-10.
- UNH led 50-20 at halftime and continued to pull away in the second half.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- UNH won its season opener for the third consecutive year.
- The Wildcats have won 11 straight home openers.
- Leissner climbed to No. 5 on UNH's career points leaderboard with 1,403; he supplanted Jaleen Smith (2013-17; 1,397 points).
- Leissner also ascended into a tie for sixth place with Scott Drapeau (1993-05) in career field goals made with 482.
- And with two free throws made, Leissner extended his UNH career record to 370.
- Jordan, a freshman point guard, got the start in his collegiate debut; he recorded a game-high five assists as well as five points, three rebounds and three steals in 27 minutes.
- In his UNH debut, junior Darryl Stewart (Atlanta, Ga.) come off the bench to record six points, four rebounds and two assists in 15 minutes.
- UNH is 3-0 lifetime against Wheelock; these teams also met in Lundholm Gym last January with a final of 95-50.
