Schmidt's Two Goals Lift Wildcats over Fairfield, 3-0

Wildcats record first-ever NCAA playoff victory
DURHAM, N.H. – Robin Schmidt (Cologne, Germany) scored two goals as the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team defeated Fairfield, 3-0, on Thursday evening at Wildcat Stadium in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 13-3-4 and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. UNH will play at No. 15 seed Dartmouth on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 1:00 p.m. The Wildcats won the previous matchup this season with the Big Green, by a 4-2 score, on Oct. 17 at Wildcat Stadium.
This is the first-ever NCAA Tournament victory in UNH history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore Jack Doherty (Meriden, N.H.) fired a shot from the corner which was saved by Gordon Botterill, but Schmidt then knocked the rebound into the back of the net from five yards out to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute (12:21).
- In the 24th minute Doherty went on a breakaway but his attempt was denied by Botterill.
- In the 31st minute, Ben Wignall blasted a shot from 25 yards out that Andrew Pesci (Windham, N.H.) was able to secure to keep the Stags off the scoreboard.
- With just 10 seconds remaining in the first half, freshman Jacob Gould (Exeter, N.H.) sent the ball to Schmidt who fired a rocket from 12 yards out into the back of the net to give the Wildcats the 2-0 lead right before halftime.
- In the 85th minute (84:18) Doherty sent in a shot that was knocked away by Botterill, but junior Kristian Piippo (Hønefoss, Norway) capitalized by scoring on the rebound to put the Wildcats up 3-0.

- The Wildcats outshot the Stags, 16-13,
- Pesci made five saves, while Botterill had seven saves.

- This was the Wildcats first home NCAA tournament game.
