Sullivan, Tupa and Wiedenfeld Will Play For UNH Volleyball in 2018
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball program, led by 22nd-year head coach Jill Hirschinger, announced Thursday that three prospective student-athletes have signed to join the UNH Wildcats in the 2018 season.
The three newest members of the UNH volleyball family are Abby Sullivan (Methuen, Mass.), Emma Tupa (Brecksville, Ohio) and Maddie Wiedenfeld (Omaha, Neb.).
Sullivan is a 5-foot-11 middle blocker at Methuen High School, where her accolades include MVC Player of the Year and All-Conference team. She also received the MVP Coaches Award as a junior. Prior to attending Methuen, Sullivan attended North Middlesex Regional High School and was named League MVP as a sophomore and Rookie of the Year as freshman. In the classroom, Sullivan has been an Honor Roll student since her freshman year.
"We are excited to welcome Abby and her family into our Wildcat family," Hirschinger said. "Abby brings natural athleticism and a great work ethic. It will be fun to challenge her at the next level and see how high she can elevate her game."
Tupa is a versatile 6-2 hitter at Brecksville High School, where she is a four-year starter and two-year captain. She is a two-time Offensive Player of the Year and three-time All-Conference First Team honoree. Tupa has also been named to the All-District First Team twice as well as the All-State Third Team. She helped lead Brecksville to the 2016 state title and 2015 Elite 8. In the classroom, Tupa has made the Honor Roll every semester.
"Emma is an all-around pin player who has played and trained at a high level," Hirschinger said. "She comes from a very athletic family that we're thrilled to add to ours. It will be fun to see what she can do when challenged at the Division I level."
Wiedenfeld is a 6-2 middle blocker and right side hitter at Marian High School. As a junior in 2016, she was named to the All-Nebraska Watch List and was a Class A All-State Honorable Mention honoree. She has been named most improved player on the Nebraska Elite club team twice and was also selected to the Nebraska Prep Clas of 2018 Super 25 list. Academically, Wiedenfeld has made the Principal's Honor Roll every semester.
"We were very impressed with Maddie from the first time we saw her and knew we wanted to add her to our program," Hirschinger said. "She brings strength and size and can contribute in the middle or on the right side. Maddie plays on one of the top-ranked teams in the country for high school and a terrific club program. We're looking forward to having Maddie and her family as part of our family."
New Hampshire has won four consecutive America East conference tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA tournament each of the past four years.
