DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire alum Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) has qualified for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. She will represent Team USA in PyeongChang, South Korea on the Biathlon team. Egan was selected to the team based on her performances during the recent World Cup season in Europe. The Olympics will be held on Feb. 9-25. Egan is now the 13th Olympian in the history of the UNH skiing program as this will be the 25th combined appearance by UNH skiing alums at the Olympics.
"I feel so proud to have met my goal to not only qualify for the team, but to qualify before Christmas," Egan said from Lake Placid, N.Y. about qualifying for her first Olympic Games. "I feel kind of surprised or even uncomfortable saying or typing, 'I am going to the Olympics.' I haven't said that before. I haven't uttered those words. It seems so surreal." Egan heads back to Europe on New Year's Eve and will compete in three World Cups during the month of January before leaving for South Korea in early February.
Egan competed for UNH in Nordic skiing in the 2010-2011 season and earned her graduate degree in 2012. She was also a member of the cross country and track and field teams.
As a Wildcat she won the Women's Nordic Team MVP, was a nominee for 2010-2011 UNH Jim Urquhart Student-Athlete of the Year Award, was named to the USCSCA All-Academic Team, and took 19th place in the 5K free and placed a team-leading 29th in the 15K classic at the NCAA Championships. Egan was also selected to the EISA All-East Second Team and took third place in the 5K free and 11th in the 15K classic at the EISA Championships.
As a member of the UNH women's track and field team, Egan won the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2011 America East Championships.
She was named to the U.S. Biathlon team's World Championship team roster in 2015 and was a member of the 2015 and 2016 World Championship teams.
Prior to UNH, Egan founded the Wellesley College Nordic Skiing club team and was the first athlete to represent Wellesley in NCAA Nordic skiing, competing in the NCAA Championships during her senior year. She was Wellesley's first ever outdoor track & field All-American when she finished sixth nationally in the 1,500m at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships.
