Jordan Scores Career-High 19 Points in 78-70 Loss to Niagara

DURHAM, N.H. – Tanner Leissner (Converse, Texas) scored 24 points and Elijah Jordan (Orlando, Fla.) netted a career-high 19 points but the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team was defeated by Niagara University, 78-70, in Tuesday night's non-conference matchup at Lundholm Gym.
Leissner scored his season-high 24 points on 9 of 18 shooting from the floor, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range; he also made all three free throw attempts and tallied seven rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal in 39 minutes.
Jordan, who came off the bench to surpass his career high in the first half with 15 points, finished with 19 as he matched his personal best of four 3-pointers. He also had a team-high five assists.
Niagara was led by the backcourt duo of Kahlil Dukes (31 points) and Matt Scott (27 points, eight rebounds). Dukes drained 8 of 11 3-pointers.
UNH is now 2-7 overall while Niagara improves to 4-5.

THE DIFFERENCE
- Niagara outscored UNH 13-2 the last four minutes of the game to transform a 68-65 deficit into a 78-70 win. Dukes drilled a 3-pointer to tie the score at 68 and ignite a 9-0 run; the next six points were scored by Scott.
GAME RECAP
- UNH led 7-5 at the first media timeout (15:31) and 16-15 at the next break (11:11).
- Niagara inched ahead, 23-19 on a Dukes' 3-pointer but Jordan answered on the other end of the floor with a shot from beyond the arc to pull the 'Cats within 23-22 at 7:46.
- The Purple Eagles scored five consecutive points to open up the largest lead of the first half – five points – and prompt New Hampshire to call time out.
- Jordan hit another 3-pointer out of the timeout and hit another on the next possession to quickly level the score, 28-28.
- Jordan's fourth 3-pointer of the half gave the Wildcats a 32-39 lead, then Leissner hit a pair of foul shots to mark UNH's largest lead of the half, 34-29.
- Scott's jumper in the closing seconds sent the teams into halftime with UNH holding a 34-31 lead.
- Niagara's 8-0 run transformed a one-point deficit (37-36) into a seven-point lead at the first media timeout with 15:53 on the clock.
- UNH inched within one point, 55-54, on Leissner's jumper at 10:10 and, on the next possession, John Ogwuche (Makurdi, Nigeria) hit his second 3-pointer of the game to level the score, 57-57.
- Jordan's driving layup put the 'Cats back in front, 61-59, at 8:32. Dukes hit a 3-pointer, but Jordan drove the lane for another layup to put UNH ahead 63-62. Dukes responded with yet another make from beyond the arc to give the Purple Eagles a 65-63 lead at 7:40.
- David Watkins (Dorchester, Mass.) connected from long range to give New Hampshire a 66-65 lead at 6:37.
- Jacoby Armstrong (Dallas, Texas) extended the advantage to 68-65 with a pair of free throws at 4:09, but that's when Niagara went on its 13-2 run to close the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- There were five ties and six lead changes in the first half; neither team led by more than six points before halftime.
- In the first half, Niagara recorded a 21-17 rebounding advantage, including a 9-5 edge on the offensive glass that produced a 12-6 edge in second-chance points.
- Dukes scored 22 second half points as he was perfect from 3-point range (5-5) and the foul line (3-3).
- Niagara shot 64% from the floor in the second half on 16 of 25 shooting, and that included 75% on 3-pointers (6-8).
- UNH continues to excel at the foul line. The Wildcats made 13 of 15 free throws (86.7%).
- Iba Camara (Dakar, Senegal) was saddled with foul trouble a majority of the game. He recorded eight points and five rebounds in 14 minutes; he fouled out with 35 seconds to play.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- With nine field goals made, Leissner climbed to No. 4 on UNH's career list with 529; he supplanted Alvin Abreu (2008-12), who made 527 FGs.
- Leissner also climbed to spots to No. 6 on the programs career rebounding list. He is tied with Jim Rich (1961-64) with 721; Leissner surpassed Eric Thielen (1987-91) at 717.
- UNH used the same starting lineup in consecutive games for the first time since games 2-4.
- This was Camara's 100th career game played. Leissner is at 99 and Armstrong is at 97.
- This was UNH's fourth loss of the season by single digits.
