'Cats Topple Holy Cross, Fall to UConn On Opening Day

Bowman Records Double-Double With 11 Kills, 14 Digs vs. UConn
QUEENS, N.Y. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team opened the 2017 season Friday night with a 3-0 win against College of the Holy Cross, then the Wildcats were upended 3-1 by the University of Connecticut. Both matches were part of Day 1 action at the Jack Kaiser Classic, which is hosted by St. John's University.
UNH outlasted the Crusaders in the first set, 28-26, then completed the sweep with subsequent set scores of 25-22 and 25-18.
In the second match vs. UConn, the Wildcats won Set 2, 25-18, after being edged 29-27 in the first set. The Huskies took the next two sets – 25-13, 25-14 – for the win.
Senior captain Courtney Bowman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) recorded a double-double vs. UConn with 11 kills and 14 digs.
Both UNH and UConn are 1-1 following the first day of action. Holy Cross is 0-2.

THE DIFFERENCE
- Holy Cross' hitting percentage decreased set-by-set from .167 in Set 1 to .095 in Set 2 to .029 in Set 3.
SET 1
- New Hampshire jumped out to a 9-5 lead but Holy Cross responded with four consecutive points to tie the score 9-9.
- Another Crusaders' four-point run gave the designated visitors a 13-11 lead.
- UNH trailed 19-18 when the 'Cats utilized a 4-0 spurt to regain the lead, 22-19.
- The Wildcats held set points at 24-20, but yet another 4-0 run by Holy Cross extended the first set.
- The Crusaders fended off two more set points (25-24 and 26-25) before the combination of Tanski's kill and a block by the duo of Olhava and Weston gave UNH the first set.
SET 2
- Holy Cross displayed its resolve by rolling out to a 7-0 lead in Set 2. UNH showed its resolve as well with a 12-5 run that leveled the second set, 12-12.
- The set remained close as neither team led by more than one point until the Wildcats took a 23-21 advantage.
SET 3
- UNH erased a 4-2 deficit with five consecutive points to take a 7-4 lead and Holy Cross never pulled even the rest of the match.
- The Wildcats' longest run of the match – six points – extended the advantage to 16-7.
- The Crusaders closed within 21-17, but UNH closed out the set and match with a 4-1 spurt.

THE DIFFERENCE
- UNH out-hit UConn .294 to .125 in Set 2, but the Huskies rebounded to record a .379 hitting percentage in Set 3 and a mark of .480 in Set 4.
SET 1
- With the score tied at 15, UNH went on a 4-0 run but that was answered by UConn's four straight points to once again level the score at 19.
- The Wildcats inched ahead 23-20 and had set points at 24-22 and 25-24.
- UConn fended off those three set points and held set point at 26-25 and 27-26. The Huskies finally captured the first set, 29-27, on consecutive kills by Danielle Cabel.
SET 2
- UConn's 4-0 spurt trimmed its deficit to 17-16, but the 'Cats responded with three consecutive points to build a 20-16 advantage.
- New Hampshire surged ahead 23-17 and closed out the set, 25-18, on Tanski's kill.
SET 3
- UConn's early 7-0 run gave the designated visitors a 9-2 lead and UNH never got closer than four points the rest of the set.
SET 4
- The Huskies opened the decisive set on a 3-0 run and then a five-point spurt extended the advantage to 10-3.
- The 'Cats closed within 13-8, but UConn put the set out of reach with a 5-1 run.
