Schafer Scores Twice in 13-3 Loss at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – Krissy Schafer (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored two goals but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was defeated 13-3 by Dartmouth College in Wednesday afternoon's non-conference game at Scully-Fahey Field.
Rebecca Sennott (Westford, Mass.) netted UNH's other goal. Kate Clancy (Barrington, R.I.) made seven saves and yielded 10 goals in the first half; she also had a team-high four ground balls. Amanda Gottlieb (Canton, Conn.), who entered the game at the start of the second half, stopped 4 of 7 shots on goal in a 30-minute relief appearance.
Dartmouth was led offensively by and Katie Bourque (3g, 3a) and Ellie Carson (3g, 1a). Larson Bennett and Campbell Brewer scored two goals apiece. DC goalie Kiera Vrindten made four saves and allowed two goals in 50:40. Katie Forman was not credited with a save with one goal against.
UNH has lost two straight since winning its season opener. Dartmouth improved to 1-1.

THE DIFFERENCE
- Dartmouth held UNH scoreless for 43 minutes, 45 seconds to build an 11-0 lead and the Wildcats never got closer than nine goals the rest of the way.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Dartmouth opened the scoring on Elizabeth Mastrio's free-position goal at 28:24.
- After Campbell Brewer gave the Big Green a 2-0 lead at 25:52, Ellie Carson (at 22:21) and Katie Bourque (17:52) converted free positions into goals to extend the advantage to 4-0.
- Brewer struck again at 16:08 and UNH, facing a five-goal deficit, called time out.
- UNH kept the home team scoreless for more than nine minutes, but Larson Bennett scored consecutive goals at 6:44 and 4:08 to push the margin to 7-0.
- Carson (2:27) and Kierra Sweeney (1:04) netted the next two goals and give DC a 9-0 lead, and Carson's third goal of the game with 23 seconds on the clock extended the lead to double digits.
- Bourque recorded her second goal -- and fifth point -- of the game to make it 11-0 at 27:48 of the second half.
- Schafer got UNH into the scoring column at 16:15 when she converted a pass from Sabrina Grovom (San Marcos, Calif.) into a goal.
- DC called a timeout at 15:34 and Bourque struck again on a free position at 13:39 to advance the score to 12-1.
- Schafer, with the assistance of Julia Neyland (Boxborough, Mass.), trimmed the deficit to single figures, 12-3, at 1:51.
- Michelle Yu closed the scoring with 83 seconds remaining.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- In the first half, UNH recorded six shots (three on goal) and 16 turnovers; six of the turnovers were on failed clears. In comparison, Dartmouth had 26 shots (17) and 10 turnovers.
- DC finished with the edge in shots (37-12), draw controls (13-3), ground balls (20-14) and turnovers (19-24).
- The Wildcats were 0-for-3 on free positions while Dartmouth went 4-for-10.
- Dartmouth has won seven consecutive matchups in the intrastate rivalry vs. New Hampshire.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Schafer now leads the team in goals (seven) and is tied for the team lead in points (seven).
- Grovom recorded her first career point with the assist on Schafer's goal.
