UNH UNH GRIDDERS READY FOR 1999 SEASON AFTER ANNUAL BLUE/WHITE SCRIMMAGE

DURHAM, N.H.-- The University of New Hampshire football team closed out the pre-season fall practices with its annual Blue/White Scrimmage at Cowell Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Looking especially good for the "Cats was junior quarterback Mike Apple (Bath, N.Y.), who connected on 13x24 passes and tossed one 10-yard touchdown pass to redshirt freshman Imion Powell (Berlin, N.J.).

Powell, who is listed at only 5-4, had two touchdowns on the day. In addition to the pass from Apple, he scored on a 2-yard run.

Senior co-captain Dan Kreider (Mount Joy, Pa.) led all receivers in terms of average with six carries for 41 yards.

Looking at the receivers, senior Jermaine Washington (West Milford, N.J.) and true freshman Dan Burkhardt (Gloucestor, N.J.) each finished the day with 53 yards. Washington checked in with five catches and Burkhardt with three.

Defensively, the big play of the day was recorded by senior strong safety Wade Rowcliffe (Caledonia, N.Y.) who made an interception at the 34-yard line and returned it 24 yards to the 10-yard line to set up a five-yard touchdown pass by redshirt freshman Ryan Day (Manchester, N.H.) to redshirt freshman Michael Taylor (Allentown, Pa.). Day finished the afternoon with eight completions for 122 yards and Taylor checked in with four catches for 41 yards.

The kicking game looked solid, as incumbent starter Shawn MacLean (Salem, Mass.) booted an impressive 43-yarder and sophomore kicker Peter Carbonara (Queens, N.Y.) powered a 42-yarder and a 26-yarder through the uprights.

The Wildcats will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 4 when they travel to Kingston, R.I. to battle the University of Rhode Island. The team will play its home-opener on Saturday, Sept. 18 vs. James Madison University.
