UNH'S STEPHAN LEWIS NAMED SPORTS NETWORK CO-NATIONAL I-AA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DURHAM, N.H.-Junior tailback Stephan Lewis (Coatesville, Pa.) of the University of New Hampshire football team was named the Sports Network I-AA Co-National Player of the Week for his record-tying performance during UNH's 45-29 victory over Hampton on Sept. 1 at Cowell Stadium. On Sunday, he was also named the recipient of an Atlantic 10 Co-Offensive Player Of The Week honor. He shared both awards with Villanova's Brian Westbrook, who also scored five touchdowns in his team's victory over Colgate.

Lewis rushed for five touchdowns in the game, which ties the Wildcat record of five set by WalterPayton Award-winner Jerry Azumah vs. Hofstra back in 1998. Lewis' touchdowns went for 1, 13, 1, 6 and 52 yards.

Lewis was the key to UNH's come-from-behind victory, as the Wildcats trailed the game (23-10) with 4:59 to go before the intermission. The UNH tailback then scored with 3:40 remaining before the half, once in the third quarter at 7:30, and then twice in the fourth to ice the victory for UNH at 12:05 and again with 3:07 to play to put the game out of reach for the Pirates.

Lewis was highly successful as a runner on the afternoon, carrying the ball 26 times for a career-high, single-game rushing yardage total of 248 yards. His previous career best came last year in UNH's victory over Massachusetts. In that contest, he carried the football 35 times for 245 yards and two touchdowns.

Looking at his career rushing numbers, Lewis has carried the football 267 times for 1,385 yards and has posted 15 career touchdowns on the ground.

Also an accomplished receiver, he caught four passes for 33 yards vs. Hampton, giving him 287 all-purpose yards on the afternoon.
