PHILADELPHIA--Redshirt freshman running back Malcolm Isom (Newton, Texas) of the University of New Hampshire football team was named the Atlantic 10 Football Conference's Rookie of the Week in recognition of his outstanding play vs. Hofstra on Sept. 14.
Isom, who received additional playing time due to a knee injury to sophomore starter R.J. Harvey (Albany, N.Y.), made the most of his opportunity by rushing the football nine times for 126 yards, good for an average of 14.0 yards per carry.
Isom also recorded the first touchdown of his young career on a 14-yard pass play from sophomore quarterback Mike Granieri (Linwood, N.J.).
A graduate of Newton High School and coached by Curtis Barbay, Isom recorded 1,500 rushing yards and 850 passing yards as a quarterback in his junior season. His 1,500 rushing yards remains a school record. At NHS, he was named first-team All-District and second team All-State for his efforts that year. He also helped lead his team to a state title in 1998.
Football also runs in Isom's family, as his cousin Derrick Parker played linebacker at Louisiana Tech and his cousin Andre played football at Baylor.
