PHILADELPHIA--The Atlantic 10 Football Conference announced today that freshman kicker Connor McCormick (Forty Fort, Pa.) was named the Atlantic 10 Special Teams Player of the Week for his heroics in UNH's hard-fought 20-19 victory vs. Richmond on Oct. 12.
McCormick's most important kick of his young career came with 16 seconds remaining in the game. After a timeout by Richmond in an attempt to ice the true freshman, McCormick confidently stepped up and booted a 27-yard field goal to clinch the victory for UNH, which is now riding a two-game winning streak.
McCormick scored the final six points of the contest for the 'Cats, as he booted a 32-yard attempt through the uprights with 6:36 remaining in the fourth quarter to pull UNH within two points (19-17 in favor of Richmond). He also was 2x2 with his PATs.
Steady improvement has been evident in terms of McCormick's kicking efforts in recent contests. He was 2x3 vs. Richmond and connected on 2x2 field goal attempts vs. Dartmouth to make him 4x5 in his last two appearances.
For the season, he has made 5x9 field goals, one from 20-29 yards, two from 30-39 yards and two from 40-49 yards, with a season long kick of 42 yards. McCormick has also been impressive with his PATs, making 10x11 attempts on the season.
The Wildcats will return to action next Saturday, Oct. 19, when UNH entertains William & Mary on Parents' Weekend. Game time is 12 p.m. and the action will be carried live on WMUR-TV (Channel 9) and on the UNH Sports Radio Network.
