UNH FOOTBALL TO PLAY NCAA QUARTERFINAL CONTEST AT UMASS
DURHAM, N.H.—The University of New Hampshire football team, on the heels of its exciting first-round playoff victory at Hampton University on Nov. 25, has moved on for a quarterfinal contest in the Division I Football Championship at the University of Massachusetts on Sat., Dec. 2. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. at McGuirk Stadium.
There are only eight teams left in the NCAA Division I Football Championship playoffs and it panned out that both participants in this quarterfinal contest are from the Atlantic 10 Football Conference.
The two teams met earlier this season and the Minutemen held on for the 28-20 victory on Nov. 4 at Cowell Stadium. UNH ran out of time attempting to score and tie the game as regulation came to a close.
The Wildcats are the only team in the Atlantic 10 Football Conference to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals three straight years, while Massachusetts won the National Championship title back in 1998 and is coming off an impressive first-round victory over Lafayette (35-14). The Minutemen (11-1 overall) controlled the contest throughout and were led by senior running back Steve Baylark, who carried the football 24 times for 152 yards and two rushing TDs.
UNH (9-3 overall) improved its all-time Division I Football Championship record to 3-4 with a 41-38 victory at Hampton in the first round. The Wildcats were led by junior quarterback Ricky Santos (Bellingham, Mass.), who tied a career mark with five TD passes and 315 passing yards, while he topped the 10,000-yard career passing yardage mark.
UNH and UMass have a long tradition of playing tough, important football games and the Minutemen lead the all-time series by a 40-25-3 margin. However, the Wildcats won the most recent meeting in Amherst by a score of 34-28 in 2005.
The winner of this week's playoff contest will move on to compete in the semifinals vs. the winner of the Southern Illinois/Montana contest.
The game can be heard live on the UNH Sports Radio Network and television coverage for the contest is TBA.
