New Hampshire field hockey falls to Virginia Commonwealth, 3-0

RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Commonwealth University netted goals late in both halves to record a 3-0 victory against the University of New Hampshire in Sunday afternoon's field hockey action at Cary Street Field. The loss drops UNH, which was voted No. 1 in this week's America East Coaches' Preseason Poll, to 0-2 while VCU is now 1-0.

Nicole Sullivan gave the Rams a 1-0 lead at 1:17 of the first half on a goal that was set up by Emily Mountjoy and Katie Carroll on a penalty corner. The home team maintained that one-goal advantage until Casey Smith scored at 4:17 of the second half. Wendi Ray closed the scoring at 2:51. UNH freshman goalkeeper Christine Buckley (Walpole, Mass.) made her first collegiate start. She recorded six saves before being lifted at the start of the second half in favor of sophomore Julie Munson (Dover, N.H.), who stopped three shots.

VCU's goalkeeping tandem of Anne Forrester and Abby Stiles combined to shut out the 'Cats. Both goalies made two saves.

New Hampshire returns to action with its home opener Aug. 31 against UMass. Game time at Memorial Field is 4 p.m.
