New Hampshire field hockey bested by Iowa, 3-1

ORONO, Maine - The University of Iowa field hockey team improved to 4-0 this season with Monday afternoon's 3-1 victory against the University of New Hampshire at the University of Maine's Alfond Sports Complex.

Iowa's Sarah Dawson gave the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal at 27:50 of the first half. Maria Merluzzi increased the advantage to two goals at 12:50 and Iowa took that lead into the second half. Tiffany Leister converted a penalty stroke with 27:20 remaining in the game.

UNH (1-3) called time out and dominated play the rest of the way. The Wildcats held the Hawkeyes without a shot in the final 27 minutes - New Hamsphire finished with a 15-9 shot advantage - and became the first team to score a goal against Iowa this season when Samantha Carr (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored at 18:23. Kristen Weldon (Avon, Conn.) was credited with an assist on the tally.

Iowa withstood New Hampshire's pressure in the closing minutes for the win. UNH goalie Christine Buckley (Walpole, Mass.) stopped six shots and counterpart Saleema Rogers also recorded six saves.

New Hampshire returns to action with its home opener Sept. 7 vs. Yale. Game time at Memorial Field is 3:30 p.m.
