New Hampshire field hockey falls to Vermont, 3-1

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Sara Mercanti scored two goals to propel the University of Vermont to Friday afternoon's 3-1 America East field hockey victory against the University of New Hampshire at Post Field. UNH is now 5-11 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

Mercanti gave UVM (7-9, 3-3) a 1-0 lead at 24:02 of the first half. The Catamounts carried that advantage into the second half until Marcie Boyer (Dillsburg, Pa.) tied the game at 14:09. Cameron Schmitz registered an assist on the tally.

Vermont regained the lead on Mercanti's second goal of the game, which came with 8:40 to play in the second half. Shawn Carney, who set up both of Mercanti's tallies, scored an unassisted goal at 4:28 to give the home team a two-goal edge.

Christine Buckley (Walpole, Mass.) registered four saves. UVM's Holly Colberg stopped 10 shots.

New Hampshire returns to action Oct. 21 (1 p.m.) at Albany. The next home game for the Wildcats is the Oct. 27 regular-season finale against Maine. Game time at Memorial Field is 1 p.m.
