BOSTON -- The University of New Hampshire field hockey team finished second in the final 2003 America East conference standings and was selected to finish there again in 2004, according to the America East Coaches' Preseason Poll that was released Thursday afternoon by the league.

UNH received one first place vote and a total of 29 points to place behind three-time defending champion Northeastern University (six first-place votes; 36 points) in the poll. Boston University garnered 28 points to place just behind New Hampshire in third place. Maine (21 points), Albany (13), Vermont (13) and UMBC (7) complete the poll.

The Wildcats will be led by senior co-captain Christine Buckley (Walpole, Mass.), a 2003 all-conference Second Team selection who returns as a fourth-year starter in goal, and junior forward Katie White (Glens Falls, N.Y.), who finished second in the conference a year ago in scoring with 44 points (21 goals, two assists).

UNH opens the 2004 season Sept. 2 at home against the University of Michigan. Game time at Memorial Field is 2 p.m.

The top four teams in the conference will advance to the America East Championship and the winner of the tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
