New Hampshire field hockey upended by Iowa, 5-0

IOWA CITY, IOWA. -- Sarah Dawson scored three goals and Debbie Birrell recorded three assists to propel the University of Iowa field hockey team to Sunday afternoon's 5-0 non-conference victory against the University of New Hampshire at Grant Field.

UNH is now 1-5 while Iowa is 3-4.

The tandem of Dawson and Birrell combined to give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead at 9:29 and Dawson's unassisted goal at 21:56 extended the advantage to 2-0.

Iowa held that two-goal lead until 41:06, when Lauren Stiver scored on a penalty corner. Kara Zappone gave the home team a 4-0 lead at 50:07 and Dawson capped the scoring in the 60th minute.

UNH starting goalie Christine Buckley (Walpole, Mass.) surrendered five goals and made 11 saves in 62:00. Margaux Shute (Norridgewock, Maine) neither allowed a goal nor was credited with a save in 8:00 of relief action. Iowa goalkeeper Barb Weinberg stopped three shots.

The Wildcats received strong defensive efforts from Brittany Schneider (Middletown, Md.) and Kate Gedney (Westbrook, Conn.), both of whom recorded two defensive saves.

New Hampshire returns to action Sept. 24 at home vs. Providence. Game time at Memorial Field is 7 p.m.
