New Hampshire field hockey upended by Massachusetts, 2-1

AMHERST, Mass. -- Katie White (Glens Falls, N.Y.) scored her fifth goal in a three-game span, but the University of New Hampshire Field hockey team was defeated 2-1 by the University of Massachusetts in non-conference action Wednesday night at Garber Field.

White, who was named Player of the Week by America East on Monday, gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at 25:19 when she beat UMass goalkeeper Christine Tocco in a 1-v-1 move on a breakaway.

The Minutewomen (4-11) rallied to tie the score on a Caitlin Beresin goal with 5:32 remaining in the first half, and the teams entered halftime tied 1-1. Kara Murphy, who set up Beresin's first-half goal, blasted a high shot into the net from close range to give UMass a 2-1 lead at 46:57.

In goal, UNH's Christine Buckley (Walpole, Mass.) recorded two saves as the Wildcats recorded an 11-8 shot advantage as well as a 6-3 edge in penalty corners. Tocco stopped three shots, including one by Kaitlyn Skelley (Wolfeboro, N.H.) from close range with 4:30 to play to preserve the one-goal advantage.

UNH (2-12) returns to action at home Oct. 15 vs. Albany. Game time at Memorial Field is 3 p.m.
