BOSTON - Michelle Tavener (Winchester, Mass.), a freshman midfielder on the University of New Hampshire field hockey team, was honored as the America East Rookie of the Week on Tuesday.
Tavener recorded four points, all on goals, in the first four games of the 2005 season. She scored a goal on a penalty stroke in her collegiate debut vs. Indiana University, and that tally pulled the Wildcats within 2-1. Tavener also scored a goal on a penalty stroke at St. Louis University. That goal gave UNH a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute and proved to be the game-winning goal in the team's 2-0 victory.
Tavener is tied for second on the team in goals (two) and is also tied for third in points (four).
New Hampshire (2-2 overall) returns to action Sept. 8 (7 p.m.) at Havard University. The next Wildcat home game is Sept. 11 against Rider. Game time at Memorial Field is 1 p.m.
