DURHAM, N.H. – Melyssa Woods (Glens Falls, N.Y.), who recently completed her freshman year at the University of New Hampshire, has been named to the 2010 New England Junior Travel Team that will compete at the USA Field Hockey Junior National Championship.
Woods was one of 18 athletes selected from a pool of 24 at the training squad. Incoming UNH freshman Tori Welch (East Hampstead, N.H.) also competed on the training squad.
The tournament will be held June 20-26 at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center at Virginia Beach. New England is scheduled to play round-robin games against Pennsylvania (June 20), New Jersey (June 21) and Mid Atlantic (June 23). The teams will then be seeded and games continue June 25-26.
Woods, a 2009 America East All-Rookie Team selection, started all 19 games for the Wildcats. She was an integral part of the midfield with regards to controlling the game's tempo and serving as a link between the backs and forwards. Woods tallied two goals and an assist for a total of five points.
Welch, a letterwinner at Pinkerton Academy, has competed in the U.S. Futures program since 2006 and was selected to the Futures Elite program in 2008 and 2009. She was named to the 2009 National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic Team.
Beginning in the early spring, High Performance Centers serving various regions conduct open trials. Once selected to a High Performance Center, athletes receive elite-level training from some of the nation's top coaches over the course of the spring. At the conclusion of the program, each High Performance Center selects a team to represent its region at the National Championship.
