James paces 'Cats with three strong efforts

Vanessa James

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Vanessa James (Malden, Mass.) hit all three of her routines and the University of New Hampshire gymnastics team performed well on three of four events to earn third place with 192.375 points in Friday's quad meet at Louisiana State University's Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

The Wildcats placed behind second-ranked LSU, which won the meet with 196.175 points, and University of Illinios-Chicago at 192.950. Western Michigan University compiled 189.975 points.

James' night began on floor exercise, where she recorded a 9.725. She followed that with another 9.725 on vault and recorded the second-best Wildcat score of the night on the uneven parallel bars at 9.675.

UNH opened the meet on floor exercise and the 'Cats hit all seven routines, including the exhibition, to finish with the second-best team score of 48.550. Amanda Hall (Bremerton, Wash.), who placed third in the all-around with a score of 38.200, tied for second place on floor at 9.825. Mariana Peña Trestini (Valencia, Valenzuela) matched James' 9.725 to tie for ninth place.

The Wildcats duplicated their floor feat on vault and once again recorded the second-highest score of the meet at 48.700. Hall and Jennifer Jones (Billerica, Mass.) both recorded a 9.800 to earn fourth place.

New Hampshire faltered on the bars, however, as three of the six Wildcat gymnasts fell off the apparatus and the team had to count scores of 9.100 and 9.850 as part of its 46.800 total. Rebekah Porter (Valparaiso, Ind.) registered a team-best 9.700 to place eighth.

The 'Cats regrouped to hit all six balance beam routines. Peña Trestini led the UNH contingent with a 9.775 that matched her season high and was the third-best effort of the meet. Hall followed in eighth place at 9.725.

New Hampshire returns to action March 12 (1 p.m.) at George Washington University with James Madison University, Kentucky and Yale. The next Wildcat home meet is March 19 vs. Towson University and Brown University. Meet time at Lundholm Gymnasium is 7 p.m.
