The University of New Hampshire women’s gymnastics team ended its regular season at the East Atlantic Gymnastic League (EAGL) Championships on Saturday evening (March 29) with a third-place finish in a league that features high-powered teams from several high-powered athletic programs.
UNH finished with its second-best score of the season, a 194.55, behind only first-place host West Virginia University ( 196.05) and second-place North Carolina State (195.475). The Wildcats topped several outstanding squads, including the University of North Carolina (193.950), the University of Maryland (193.375), the University of Pittsburgh (193.175), George Washington University (192.975) and also Rutgers University (189.025).
UNH was solid in three of four events, but continued to show improvement on the vault where both sophomore Helena Diodati (Scarborough, Maine) and junior Justine Turner (Salem, Mass.) excelled, as Diodati was third overall with a mark of 9.875 and Turner was fifth (9.85).
On bars, senior Rebekah Porter (Valparaiso, Ind.), who has been very strong at the end of the season, was UNH’s top finisher in the meet, grabbing a tie for second with a team-high score of 9.825 on bars. Sophomore Kelsey Alwin (St. Michael, Minn.) also continued to help the team with an 11th-place judgement of 9.725.
The Wildcats did not fare as well as usual on beam relative to the rest of the teams, as the top finisher in the event for UNH was freshman Chelsea Steinberg (Ridgewood, N.J.) who led the Wildcats with an 18th-best score of 9.7.
In the floor exercise UNH earned a pair of eighth-place finishes overall as sophomores Taryn LaFountain (Utica, N.Y.) and Keeley Smith (University Place, Wash.) each posted impressive totals of 9.850.
The Wildcats had no all-arounders in the meet, but had several gymnasts score big in two or three events on the night.
