UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- The University of New Hampshire women's gymnastics team placed second out of a field of four teams at a quad meet held on the campus of Penn State University on Saturday night in Rec Hall.
The Wildcats posted a solid team score of 193.4 in their second away meet in two days. The winner of the meet was Penn State (196.175), while Bridgeport placed third (189.475) and Rutgers finished fourth with a mark of 187.525. UNH is now 13-5 on the 2009 season.
The 'Cats started the meet on the floor exercise and struggled early with the team's highest score being posted by senior Justine Turner (Salem, N.H.) as she posted a mark of 9.65 to tie for fifth place. The team total on floor was just a 47.425.
However the squad settled in the rest of the way and put together solid team marks in the final three events.
The team continues to excel in vault and posted an overall total of 49.0. The squad was led by Turner, who wrapped up second place overall with a judgement of 9.875. Also performing well on vault was sophomore Katie Caliendo (Manorville, N.Y.) and junior Helena Diodati (Scarborough, Maine) who each tied for fourth overall with scores of 9.825.
Bars for UNH was led by junior Diane Grey (Spring, Texas) who posted an impressive score of 9.850 to tie for second overall, while Diodati tied for fifth with a 9.825. The team posted a team score of 48.324 on bars.
UNH wrapped up the meet on beam and finished strong with a 48.650. Sophomore Katie Lawrence (Lyme, Conn.) had a big score to earn second overall with a 9.875 to lead the 'Cats.
The Wildcats return home this coming weekend when the squad entertains George Washington in Lundholm Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.unhwildcats.com.
