PROVIDENCE, R.I.-The University of New Hampshire women's gymnastics team remains undefeated with a perfect 7-0 record after winning a quad meet at Brown on Sunday afternoon with its second-best score of the season, a 193.850 in the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Wildcats posted victories over second-place Brown (186.40), Southern Connecticut (184.925) and MIT (153.7).
UNH recorded at least the top three finishers in all four events and had the top five gymnasts in three of the four. Leading the ‘Cats overall and in the all-around was junior Chelsea Steinberg (Ridgewood, N.J.) as she was top gymnast of the meet in three events and won the all-around with a high score of 38.975. It was the first all-around score of the season for UNH. Steinberg placed first in the vault with a mark of 9.675, took top honors on beam with a judgement of 9.8 and she recorded her highest score of the afternoon in the floor exercise with an impressive 9.85, a mark tied by senior Taryn LaFountain (Utica, N.Y.). LaFountain was also very strong on balance beam, finishing right behind Steinberg with a score of 9.75, good for second place overall.
Leading the Wildcats in the bars competition was sophomore Danielle Reibold (Horsham, Pa.) who recorded a 9.825 to take top honors for UNH.
The floor exercise was the highest scoring event of the day for UNH, as the team recorded an impressive mark of 48.9 in the event. In addition to the first-place score by Steinberg and LaFountain, senior Julie Sauchuck (Peabody, Mass.) was once again strong on the mats, as she recorded a third-place judgement of 9.825 in what has turned out to be a very strong 1-2-3 punch in the event for the ‘Cats.
The Wildcats return home on Jan. 30 vs. EAGL rival Pittsburgh. The meet is set to begin at 4 p.m. at Lundholm Gymnasium and tickets are available online at www.unhwildcats.com.
