BATON ROUGE, La. – Austyn Fobes (Howell, N.J.) scored a 39.1 to win the individual all-around championship, but the University of New Hampshire gymnastics team fell at No. 24 Louisiana State University, 196-194.35, at the Maravich Center on Friday night.
UNH, which moves to 9-6 on the season, started slowly on uneven bars, getting outscored 48.925-47.875 on that apparatus. Fobes led the Wildcats with a 9.775, tying for third place, while Jen Aucoin (Mullica Hill, N.J.) and Ali Carr (Chelmsford, Mass.) knotted for fifth place with matching scores of 9.725.
The Wildcats fought back on beam, where senior co-captain Chelsea Steinberg (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored highest with an awe-inspiring 9.825. Co-captain Katie Lawrence (Lyme, Conn.) took fourth place with a 9.775, and Katie Caliendo (Manorville, N.Y.), the third Wildcat senior, took fifth place with a 9.75. UNH edged LSU on beam, 48.775-48.725.
Fobes was the top New Hampshire performer on floor with a 9.85, but that was only good for a tie for fourth in an event the Tigers captured, 49.3-48.725.
Steinberg claimed victory on vault with a season-high 9.9, while Carr scored a 9.8 for fifth and Caliendo tallied a 9.775 for sixth place. Still, LSU edged UNH on vault, 49.050-48.975.
"This is a great team," head coach Gail Goodspeed said. "They just have to start off the meet as aggressive and confident at the beginning of the meet as they do at the end."
