MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The University of New Hampshire gymnastics team was picked to finish fifth in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) preseason poll, released Wednesday. The voting was conducted among the league's eight head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams.
The Wildcats, who finished as the EAGL runners-up last season, open the 2012 campaign this Saturday, Jan. 7, with a 1 p.m. league meet at Rutgers. UNH posted a 17-10 record and earned a No. 30 national ranking in 2011, highlighted by head coach Gail Goodspeed's 500th career victory at the University.
"We are excited to begin the season with a good mix of returning gymnasts and a dynamic freshman class that has the potential to contribute right off the bat," Goodspeed said.
UNH brings back three All-EAGL First Team performers in senior co-captain Ali Carr (Chelmsford, Mass./vault), senior Danielle Reibold (Horsham, Pa./uneven bars) and junior Austyn Fobes (Howell, N.J./floor exercise, all-around).
New Hampshire earned 31 points in the preseason poll. North Carolina State, with 42 points, was picked to finish first, two-time defending EAGL champion North Carolina (40 points) was selected second and West Virginia (38) was picked third. Maryland (34) is preseason No. 4, and positions 6-8 are occupied by Pittsburgh (16), Rutgers (14) and George Washington (nine), respectively.
The Wildcats' first home meet of the season is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 15, at 1 p.m. against Penn State at Lundholm Gymnasium. For information on UNH gymnastics season tickets, call (603) 862-4000 x 5 or CLICK HERE.
