DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire senior Austyn Fobes (Howell, N.J.) has been named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Week, and junior Hannah Barile (Sinking Spring, Pa.) was feted as the EAGL Specialist of the Week following the opening weekend of league action.
Fobes notched a personal-best all-around score of 39.425, which matched the fourth-best AA score in school history, to propel the UNH gymnastics team to Sunday afternoon's 194.850-192.800 season-opening EAGL victory against Rutgers at Lundholm Gymnasium. She earned her second career EAGL Gymnast of the Week honor (Jan. 25, 2011) after posting the meet's top score on vault (9.850) and uneven bars (9.875), tying for the top mark on floor exercise (9.875) and registering the meet's top AA score, which was a mere 0.050 points off the best performance in UNH history.
Barile, who earned her first career EAGL weekly honor, set a personal best on floor exercise with a 9.875, which shared first place with Fobes. The junior matched her personal best with a 9.775 on vault to tie for third place and scored an impressive 9.750 in her collegiate debut on uneven bars for sixth place.
The Wildcats return to action with a Friday, Jan. 11, non-conference meet at Central Michigan (7 p.m.). The next home meet at Lundholm Gym is slated for Friday, Jan. 18, against EAGL preseason favorite and No. 22 North Carolina State (0-1).
