DURHAM, N.H.-- Craig Claxton scored 24 points and Jason Hernandez tied his career-high with 22 points to lead Hofstra University to an 83-45 America East victory over the University of New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon in Lundholm Gymnasium.
Hofstra (12-5, 7-1) opened the contest with a 22-2 run on the Wildcats (3-14, 2-7) and never looked back. New Hampshire's only points during that stretch was a basket by center Rob Marquardt with 18:18 to play and the score 4-2 in favor of the Flying Dutchmen. The visitors led at the intermission (43-21) and held their biggest lead of the contest, 38 points, on four occassions during the game, including the final score.
New Hampshire was led in scoring by point guard Marcelle Williams, who finished the afternoon with 14 points and five rebounds. Austin Ganly and Chris Brown each also contributed nine points in the losing effort.
In all, Hofstra had four players score in double digits on the afternoon, including 10 points by Roberto Gittens and Norman Richardson.
Hofstra outrebounded New Hampshire by a 51-30 margin and was led on the boards by Gittens with 12. As a team, the Flying Dutchmen shot .470 from the floor (31x66) as compared to the home team's mark of .273 (15x55).
UNH will return to action on Jan. 27 when the squad travels to Delaware and on Jan. 29 when the Wildcats battle Towson. The team will return home on Feb. 3 when New Hampshire entertains Hartford. Game time is 7 p.m in Lundholm Gymnasium.
