DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire basketball teams held their annual Media Day in the Skybox Lounge of the Whittemore Center today, where it was announced that seniors Austin Ganly (N. Yarmouth, Maine) and Assane Faye (Dakar, Senegal) will join fellow senior Chris Brown (Boston, Mass.) as tri-captains of the men's basketball team.
Ganly, a 6-6 swingman, returns from a breakthrough 2000-01 campaign in which he led team in scoring with 13.3 points per game. Faye, an athletically-gifted 6-7 small forward, started off slow for the 'Cats last season before rebounding in the last 14 games with 8.6 ppg.
Early this summer, Brown announced publicly that he had opted to use his final year of eligibility and would return as a captain of the Wildcats. A 6-4 forward, Brown co-captained the Wildcats to a 7-21 record last season, more than doubling their win total from the year before when they went 3-25.
Brown, who redshirted his first year (1997-98) at UNH, was the fourth leading scorer for the Wildcats last season with 7.1 ppg. and led the team in rebounding with 4.0 rebounds per game despite sitting out the first four games of the season with a torn tendon in his right ring finger. During his sophomore year, Brown was third in America East in rebounding with 8.2 rpg. and was second on the Wildcats in scoring with 10.7 ppg.
Ganly was among the leading Division I scorers in the nation early last season, topping out at 25.6 ppg. through the first five games, best in the NCAA. Ganly continued his strong play through the first 14 games averaging 18.2 ppg, but slumped to 3.9 ppg. in the next nine game before breaking out with 28 points in a 93-85 victory over Drexel University.
The men's team starts its exhibition season Nov. 1 against G.T. Express (7 p.m.) while the women get things started on Nov. 4 against Bishop's University (4 p.m.).
