BURLINGTON, VT. - Scotty Jones went for 21 points on 8 for10 shooting as he led the University of Vermont to a 85-68 victory over the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team at Patrick Gym in Burlington, Vermont on Wednesday.
The win pushes the Catamounts record to 16-10 overall and 9-4 in America East. The Wildcats fall to 4-21, 2-12 in America East. Sophomore Ben Sturgill (Hamilton, Ohio) had a career night, netting 20 points on 8 for 9 shooting. Senior Shawn Collette (Westminster, Mass.) was two points shy of his career high, scoring 15 while shooting 4 for 5 from three-point range. Junior Marcus Bullock (Cherry Hill, N.J.) went for 11 points, hitting 3 of 6 attempts from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats held conference leading scorer Taylor Coppenrath to just eight points and four rebounds, but they couldn't find an answer to stopping Jones off the bench. Jones hit 8 of 10 shots from inside arc and was 5 for 8 from the free throw line.
UVM had two other players in double figures off the bench. Mike Goia scored 12 points and Corey Sullivan netted 10.
The Catamounts led by 17 at the half, 44-27. The Wildcats matched the host in the second half, 41-41, but came up short in making up the deficit.
UNH is off this weekend and will return to action at Boston University next Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
