Sturgill Named Second-Team All-Conference
VESTAL, N.Y.-- Senior center Ben Sturgill (Hamilton, Ohio) was named to the America East Second-Team All-Conference team and freshman forward Mike Christensen (Reston, Va.) was selected to the conference's All-Rookie team. The announcement was made today at the conference's annual awards banquet in Vestal, N.Y.
Sturgill has enjoyed an outstanding senior campaign in which he presently leads the team in scoring (13.5 ppg.), rebounding (6.5 rpg.) and in field goal percentage with a mark of .560 (144-257). His scoring average is 11th-best in the conference while his rebounding average is good for eighth and his shooting percentage is the best in the league. Sturgill has scored in double digits in his last 12 consecutive contests and has also recorded five double-doubles in points and rebounds in 2004-05. Sturgill was named America East Player of the Week for his outstanding efforts against Boston University and UMBC. In the 73-64 victory over the Retrievers, Ben recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 boards. He was equally as impressive vs. the Terriers, scoring 18 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Sturgill showed great courage this year playing several games with a wired-shut broken jaw. For his career, he has recorded 861 career points and 417 career rebounds in 93 games played heading into the America East men's basketball tournament.
Christensen has improved steadily as the season has progressed and started 26 of the team's 27 games played. Heading into the America East tournament he was UNH's third-leading scorer with an average of 8.9 ppg. and he was the squad's third-leading rebounder with 5.0 boards per contests. A great passer for a big man, he was third in assists with 58 this season and he was tied for third in steals with 25. Christensen was named America East Rookie of the Week for his efforts vs. Northeastern and Albany, as he averaged 16.0 ppg. and 7.5 rpg. in the two contests. Christensen scored in double-digits 12 times this season, including three of his last four most recent outings. During that four-game stretch he averaged 13.3 ppg. for the Wildcats. His best game this season was a 19-point scoring effort vs. Albany and he was had several big rebounding performances, including a season-high 12-rebound effort at Binghamton.
Both Sturgill and Christensen will return to action today when the No. 8 seeded Wildcats battle No. 9 seed UMBC in the first round of the America East Men's Basketball Tournament. Should UNH win that game, the team is scheduled to play No. 1 seed Vermont on Sat., March 5. Tipoff for that contest is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
