MEN'S BASKETBALL HOSTS RIVAL MAINE LIVE ON NESN
Scouting the Wildcats (8-14, 4-5 AE)
The Wildcats are in search of stopping a current three game losing streak,which includes an 82-79 double-overtime loss to America East leader Vermont on Wednesday... Senior Blagoj Janev posted a game-high 26 points and four rebounds and Jermaine Anderson tallied 14 points and five assists. Sophomore guard Tyrece Gibbs notched 18 points and five rebounds in the heartbreaking loss... UNH has lost all four overtime games played this season and ties the 1989-90 squad for most extra session games played in a single season. New Hampshire registered an 0-2 record in the previous week... UNH lost by a combined eight points in the two defeats... The Wildcats last fell to UMBC last Thursday, 45-44, in another heartbreaking loss... Gibbs and Janev combined for 28 points and freshman forward Radar Onguetou  posted his first career double-double (12 rebounds, 11 points) in the loss... UNH held UMBC scoreless for 12:39 in the first half, but a second half of offensive struggles halted its season-high three-game winning streak... UNH hosted defending America East champion UAlbany on Sunday and rallied in the second half for 42 points, but the Wildcats fell to the Great Danes for a second time this season, 71-64... Gibbs led the way for the ‘Cats as the guard notched three-consecutive 3-pointers in the final minutes of play and scored a team-high 21 points and seven rebounds... Anderson tallied 12 points, while Janev posted 18 points and five assists in the loss.


Scouting the Black Bears (10-12, 5-5 AE)
Maine is led by Kevin Reed who is averaging 13.8 points per game. He is pulling down a team-high 6.1 rebounds a game. He has 56 three-point field goals on the season. Jon Sheets is chipping in with 11.5 points per game. He is dishing out 3.1 assists per game and grabbing 1.5 steals per game. Sheets has a team-high 60 three-point field goals on the season. Junior Bernal is scoring 10.4 points per game. He is dishing out 3.1 assists per game and recording 1.8 steals per game. He is also grabbing 3.9 rebounds per game. Chris Bruff is adding 10.0 points per game and is pulling down 5.4 rebounds a game. Mark Socoby is chipping in with 7.5 points per game. Philippe Tchekane Bofia is adding 7.3 points per game and 4.0 rebounds a contest. Maine is shooting 42.8 percent from the floor, while its opponents have connected 41.4 percent of the time. The Black Bears are grabbing 35.0 rebounds per game, while their opponents are pulling down 35.3 per game.

Overtime Troubles
    The Wildcats recently fell 82-79 in double-overtime to America East leader Vermont on Wednesday. The loss marks the fourth time this season that UNH played in an extra session, with all four overtimes resulting in loses. UNH tied the 1989-90 squad with the most overtimes played in a single season. UNH has lost by a combined 14 points in those defeats. UNH has also suffered two loses in the final possesion this season at the hands of UMBC on Jan. 25 and a buzzer beater against Vermont on Jan. 9.

Charity Points
    Senior captain Jermaine Anderson’s is second in the America East at the chairty stripe (60-70), shooting at a 85.8 percent clip. During the 2005-06 campaign, Anderson shot 68-of-74 (91.9%) from the foul line, placing him second in all of Division 1 basketball.

Tale of Two Halves
    For a second straight contest, the Wildcats erupted in the second half en route to scoring 41 second half points in two consecutive games. UNH is 2-8 when trailing at the half, while posting a 5-6 record when heading into halftime with a lead.

On The Radar
    Freshman forward Radar Onguetou is making an impact on head coach Bill Herrion’s starting lineup. The forward has made six straight starts en route to scoring an average of 8.2 ppg and 8.1 rpg for UNH.  Onguetou delivered a double-double against UMBC on January 25. (11 points and 12 rebounds). Onguetou most recently posted a team-high eight boards in a loss to Vermont on Jan. 31.

Gibbs Getting It Done
    Tyrece Gibbs has stepped up on the offensive side for the Wildcats after UNH witnessed its second leading scorer in Mike Christensen go down with a broken foot on January 9. Since that time, UNH has posted a 4-3 record and Gibbs has averaged 14.8 ppg, including a career-high 22 points in a win over Hartford on January 11.  Gibbs posted 18 points and seven rebounds against Vermont on Wednesday.

Three Ball
    The Wildcats lead all of America East in three-point baskets made with 183, which is nine more then second ranked Hartford . In 22 games played, UNH averages 7.85 trifectas per game. UNH is sixth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (34.6 percent) and is second in 3-point field goal defense percentage (32.2 percent).


 Janev Moves into UNH’S Top-Five For All-Time Scoring Ranks
    Senior co-captain Blagoj Janev recorded 26 points in a 82-79 double overtime loss to Vermont on January 31.  He has now registered 1,277
career points. Janev moved into fifth all-time for scoring, surpassing alum Dan Nolan’s 1,258 career points.

Stealing the Show
    Senior Jermaine Anderson recently moved into sixth place on UNH’s all-time steals list with 127, moving ahead of Bryant Davis’ (1989-93) 125 career steals.

Fresh Starts
    The Wildcats have six freshmen this season in Dan McGeary (12 starts), Radar Onguetou (12 starts), Seth Price (9 starts), and Sam Herrick (3 starts). The six have combined to start 32 games throughout  22 games this season.


Repeat For All-Conference
    Blagoj Janev, who was selected to the 2005-06 America East All-Conference Team is making another case this season.  Janev has been awarded America East Player of the Game on a team-high 10 occassions and leads the Wildcats in scoring with 14.8 points per game.

 Road Warriors
    The New Hampshire Wildcats endured the toughest road schedule of all America East teams this season. UNH went on an eight game road trip, posting a 3-5 record in the process. UNH played Harvard on November 29 before returning home on January 9.

Christensen Is Missed
    The Wildcats lost their second leading scorer Mike Christensen on Jan. 9 with a broken foot.  His last full game was against Maine as he torched the Black Bears for a career-high 28 points in a 73-68 win.

America East On The Rise
    With just three regular-season non-conference games remaining, America East squads have sailed past last year’s non-conference win total. America East teams are currently 49-61 (.445) in 2006-07, compared to just 33-69 (.324) a season ago. The conference is on pace to register 50 regular-season non-conference victories this campaign, which would be the most since the league recorded 52 in 1994-95 when there were also nine teams in the league.

Anderson Assists
    Senior Jermaine Anderson ranks fifth in the America East in assists with 77, averaging 3.94 per game.

Rivaly Renewed
    One of the biggest rivalries in America East will be renewed on Saturday, February 3 when Maine heads to Lundholm Gym to take on New Hampshire. In a battle of New England rivals with significant implications in the standings on the line, Maine will look avenge an early season 73-68 loss to the Wildcats. The game can be seen live on television (NESN) and online as part of America East Basketball Presented by Boston Herald.
