CHRISTENSEN GARNERS AMERICA EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The America East conference announced Monday that senior forward Mike Christensen (Reston, Va.), of the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team, was named America East Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending March 2.

Christensen picks up his first Player of the Week award on the final week of his regular-season career. On top of it being Christensen’s first Player of the Week award during his time at UNH, it is also the first time a UNH player has received the accolade since Jermaine Anderson shared the award Jan. 21, 2007. Prior to that, Blagoj Janev (twice), Ronnie Davis and Ben Sturgill (twice) all shared the award on five separate weeks over the course of three seasons, making this the first outright Player of the Week award for the program since Marcus Bullock took home the honor Feb. 17, 2002.

Christensen capped his regular-season career in style in a 68-65 win at home over Vermont on Feb. 28, the Wildcats’ only game of the week. Christensen scored 24 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc, and was also 6-of-8 at the line. Christensen also tallied four rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal.

The tri-captain, who was selected to the America East All-Rookie Team at the end of the 2004-05 season, won his only other weekly award when he captured Rookie of the Week honors Feb. 6, 2005.

After tallying his 1,000th career point – the 25th Wildcat ever to do so – Feb. 14 at Binghamton, his 500th career rebound Feb. 20 against Stony Brook and his 200th career assist Feb. 28 at UMBC, Christensen became the second player in program history to reach all three milestones. He is currently 17th on UNH’s all-time scoring list with 1,067 points.

Christensen finished the regular season second on the team in rebounding (5.8 rpg), second in blocks (0.54 bpg), third in scoring (12.4 ppg) and third in assists (2.5 apg). He was also third in field goal percentage (.384), 3-point field goal percentage (.370) and free throw percentage (.764).

The seventh-seeded Wildcats return to action Saturday, March 8 at 6 p.m. when they take on No. 2 Hartford in the quarterfinal round of the America East tournament at the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y.
