MEN'S HOOPS WINS THIRD STRAIGHT; DROPS QUINNIPIAC
BOX

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior guard Eric Gilchrese (Springfield, Ill.) scored 20 points, and senior forward Mike Christensen (Reston, Va.) added 17 to lead the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team to Sunday afternoon’s 77-70 win over Quinnipiac University at Lundholm Gymnasium.

The win moves the Wildcats’ record to 3-1, while the loss drops the Bobcats to 1-3.

After an Evan Baker 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining in the game cut the Wildcat lead to 74-70, Christensen’s outlet pass led to a dunk that sealed the game on the other end by freshman forward Dane DiLiegro (Lexington, Mass.). DiLiegro was fouled in the act, and converted the three-point play when he drained his free throw.

The two teams battled back and forth for most of the first half, until a Christensen 3-pointer with 4:11 left in first half gave the Wildcats a lead they would never give up (27-24). Christensen rounded out his stat line by tallying five rebounds, six assists and three steals.

The Wildcats, who shot 50 percent from the field (26-for-52), went on a 13-4 run over the final four minutes of the first half to take a 40-30 lead into the locker room.

Freshman guard Alvin Abreu (Lynn, Mass.) netted 11 of his 14 points in the first half, while Gilchrese, the America East Player of the Game, also recorded 11 in the first frame.

UNH took a game-high 12-point lead 4:04 into the second half, but the Bobcats used a 10-0 run to get back in the game. The Bobcats kept the game tight, coming as close as 62-61 with 4:28 left in the contest, but the ‘Cats were too much and slowly pulled away over the final three minutes.

The Bobcats were led by DeMario Anderson and Baker, who each scored 25 points to combine for 50 of Quinnipiac’s 70 total points.

Quinnipiac turned the ball over 20 times as compared to UNH’s 10, and was outscored 26-6 in points off turnovers.

UNH returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. when they travel to take on Harvard. The ‘Cats return home Monday, Dec. 3 when they play host to Northeastern (7 p.m.) at Lundholm.
