MEN'S BASKETBALL HONORED AT AMERICA EAST BANQUET

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senior guard Tyrece Gibbs (Brockton, Mass.), of the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team, was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team the conference announced Friday morning at its annual awards banquet.
Radar Onguetou

Gibbs, who was selected to the Third Team last season, is the first Wildcat to garner Second Team honors since former teammate Blagoj Janev in 2007.

Junior forward Radar Onguetou (Yaounde, Cameroon) was also honored as he was chosen as part of the five-member All-Academic Team.

Gibbs, who leads the team and is eighth in the conference in scoring at 14.4 points per game, has turned it up a notch down the stretch, averaging 17.7 points per game over the span of his seven-game double-digit scoring streak, which is tied for the longest of his career. Gibbs has started all 28 games this year for the Wildcats, while averaging 4.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 0.82 blocks and 0.77 steals per game. The co-captain also leads the conference in 3-pointers made with 81, which is second all-time in a single season at UNH. Gibbs, who played in his 114th career game versus Albany on Feb. 26 to become the Wildcats’ all-time games played leader, now has 1,293 career points and is fifth on UNH’s all-time scoring list.

Onguetou, a political science major with a 3.41 grade-point average - the highest GPA of the five student-athletes who made the team - was recently honored for owning the highest GPA in his major. Onguetou has played in 26 games this season and is averaging 5.0 points per game to go along with 5.3 rebounds per game, which is second on the team, as well as 0.9 assists per contest.

Both athletes have helped lead the ‘Cats (13-15, 8-8 AE) to their best regular season in 14 years. The 13 wins are the most since UNH recorded 19 during the 1994-95 season, while the 8-8 conference record marks just the second .500 conference campaign in seven years and the first since the 2005-06 season when head coach Bill Herrion guided his squad to a 12-17 overall record and an 8-8 mark in the conference.

The fourth-seeded Wildcats return to action when they take on No. 5 Stony Brook in the quarterfinal round of the America East Championship on Saturday, March 7 at 8:30 p.m. at SEFCU Arena. Tickets can be purchased by calling (603) 862-4000, ext. 5, or in person at the Whittemore Center Box Office, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
