DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire men's basketball head coach Bill Herrion and his staff announced Monday that seniors Alvin Abreu (Lynn, Mass.) and Tyrone Conley (Burlington, Vt.) have been named co-captains for the upcoming 2010-11 season.
"We are expecting Alvin and Tyrone to provide great leadership with this basketball team," Herrion said. "Through their experience and great work ethic, we expect them to lead this team and show the way. We have four seniors on this year's team and expect all four of them to be great leaders."
Abreu, who was a tri-captain for the Wildcats last year, stepped his offensive game up a notch as he scored in a variety of ways to bump his average up to 14.4 ppg en route to becoming the 27th Wildcat in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. The 2008 All-Rookie Team member, who averaged 18.4 ppg during a 10-game double-digit scoring streak from Jan. 21-Feb.20, was selected to the America East All-Conference Second Team and also took home Player of the Game honors for earning the most America East Player of the Game awards during the season. As is always the case with every athlete, health was key for Abreu as he was the only 'Cat to start in all 30 games.
Abreu's 2008 All-Rookie teammate, Conley will also join the 1,000-point club this season barring injury. Conley averaged 11.7 ppg a year ago while leading the team in 3-pointers made. Conley poured in 16.1 ppg over the course of eight games from Dec. 9-Jan. 10, including Jan. 2 at Santa Clara when he netted a career-high 28 points on a career-best six 3-pointers. Maybe Conley's biggest highlight, however, came Feb. 20 when his runner in the lane with 0.7 seconds on the clock led UNH to a 61-60 win at Loyola (Md.) in the team's first ever ESPN BracketBusters appearance.
