CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of New Hampshire men's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 79-74 victory over Maine on Sunday and will open the 2013 America East Men's Basketball Tournament with a March 9 quarterfinal matchup against Vermont. The game will begin at noon at the University at Albany's SEFCU Arena and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
UNH (9-19, 5-11) lost the tiebreaker to UMBC in the league standings to earn the No. 7 seed and will battle No. 2 Vermont (19-10, 11-5) in the first quarterfinal game. The Catamounts are seeded second or better for the ninth time in 11 years and will be seeking their second-straight league crown. The Wildcats, winners of two of their last three, are seeking their first league title and championship game appearance.
The Wildcats were swept by UVM in the regular season with a 64-51 loss at Lundholm Gymnasium on Jan. 2 and a 63-48 loss at Vermont on Feb. 6. Vermont leads the all-time series between the two schools with a record of 87-49.
UNH owns a 9-30 lifetime record in the America East Tournament, including 0-3 against UVM. The two teams last met in the 2010 conference tournament when Vermont captured a 57-38 win over the Wildcats in the semifinals.
After UNH's game against Vermont, No. 3 Hartford will take on No. 6 UMBC (2 p.m.), followed by No. 1 Stony Brook against No. 8 Binghamton (6 p.m.) and No. 4 Albany against No. 5 Maine (8 p.m.). The four winners will advance to the semifinals on Sunday, March 10. The two semifinal winners will play for the America East title and an automatic NCAA bid on Saturday, March 16 at 11:30 a.m. at the highest remaining seed's home court.
