Durham, N.H.(AP)-Colin Hemingway scored his first two collegiate goals to lead the New Hampshire men's hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Merrimack Friday night at the Whittemore Center.
New Hampshire (17-3-1, 9-1-1 Hockey East) extended the lead to 4-2 at 8:51 of the third period when Corey Joe Ficek put in a shot after a scramble in front of the Merrimack (8-12-1, 4-7-1) goal. Forwards Lanny Gare and Darran Haydar recorded assists on the goal.
In the second period, New Hampshire took a 3-2 lead at 15:05 when Ficek fed a pass to John Sadowski whose shot trickled through the legs of Merrimack goaltender Tom Welby. New Hampshire tied the game 2-2 at the 10:40 mark when Mark White took a slapshot from the top of the blueline and Hemingway tipped it in for the goal. Merrimack scored goals from Sandy Cohen and Anthony Aquino within a span of 13 seconds to take a 2-1 lead at the beginning of the period.
New Hampshire opened the scoring at 2:35 of the first period when Hemingway scored his first collegiate goal. Hemingway came from around the net and beat Welby low stick side.
Ty Conklin finished with 20 saves for New Hampshire and Welby stopped 25 shots in a losing cause.
These two teams will meet again on Saturday night at Merrimack’s Volpe Center.
