BOSTON, MA -- Northeastern matched a season-high with six goals and pounded No. 2 New Hampshire 6-2 in a Hockey East game at Matthews Arena Friday.
With the score tied 2-2, Roger Holeczy put the Huskies ahead for good, scoring at 14:59 of the second period on assists from Ryan Zoller and Willie Levesque. Holeczy took a feed in the slot from Zoller and beat UNH goaltender Ty Conklin right under the crossbar. NU took the 3-2 edge into the second intermission.
It was all Huskies in the third period as Brian Cummings scored at 5:46 from Graig Mischler and then Zoller and Levesque added insurance goals at 11:06 and 17:20 respectively. Freshman Mike Gilhooly was sharp for the Huskies, making 22 saves to record his eighth win of the year. The Huskies solved Conklin, who allowed a season-high six goals for the second time.
It was the first time since Dec. 4 that the Huskies tallied six times, breaking a two-game drought in which they scored just once, losing 3-1 at Providence last Friday and 6-0 in Beanpot action Monday against Boston College. NU improved to 12-10-5, 8-5-5 in conference play, while the Wildcats fell to 19-5-5, 11-3-5 in Hockey East.
The first period saw UNH jump on top with Lenny Gare’s wrister, which beat Gilhooly at 12:22 to put the Wildcats up 1-0. NU evened the score at 1-1 when Billy Newson’s shot trickled past Ty Conklin with only 13 seconds left in the period.
Period two saw UNH get right back on top with 1:08 gone, as Gare struck again and gave UNH a 2-1 advantage with his second goal of the night. Husky Bobby Davis brought NU back to 2-2 with his ninth of the season, pushing the puck under Conklin at 2:18.
