DURHAM, N.H.-- Mike Souza's goal 7:40 into overtime lifted the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team (23-7-6, 13-5-6) to a 3-2 victory over Merrimack College (11-19-6, 6-12-6) Friday night at the Whittemore Center, in the Hockey East quarterfinals.
With the win New Hampshire advances to the Hockey East semifinals next weekend in Boston.
Souza received a pass from Darren Haydar and blasted a shot from the top left circle past Merrimack goaltender Tom Welby. Matt Swain also assisted on the goal. It was the second straight night Souza recorded the game winning goal.
Both goalies played well in net as Welby ended with 47 saves while Ty Conklin stopped 29 shots for New Hampshire.
Merrimack opened the scoring when Greg Classen's shot from the slot beat Conklin at 11:47 of the first period. Welby ended with 18 saves in the first period while Conklin stopped seven shots.
New Hamsphire evened the score at 1-1 when Ryan Cordiero beat Welby at 3:07 of the second period for his third goal of the season. Merrimack regained the lead as Sandy Cohen scored his 14th goal of the season with under two minutes to go in the second.
New Hampshire tied the score at 2-2 when Garrett Stafford's shot of the face-off beat Welby eight minutes into the third period.
