DURHAM, N.H. - Merrimack College scored two goals in the third period, the game-tying goal with 1:10 remaining in regulation, as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team tied the Warriors, 3-3, on Saturday at the Whittemore Center.
Down by one goal with 1:20 to play, Merrimack called time out and scored on the ensuing face-off on a goal by Joey Gray, his second of the period. Scoring goals for the Wildcats were seniors Matt Swain (Oakville Ontario) and Corey-Joe Ficek (Bedford, N.H.) and sophomore Jim Abbott (Mars, Penn.).
In overtime, UNH was on the power play for final 1:41 but Welby preserved the tie with several key saves. Gray's first goal of the third period came at 6:32 on an assist from John Pyliotis.
Two goals in the second period by Ficek and Abbott gave the Wildcats a 3-1 lead after two periods.
