DURHAM, N.H. - Senior captain Darren Haydar (Milton, Ont.) of the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was named Player of the Week by the Hockey East Association on Monday afternoon.
UNH's captain scored 4-5-9 vs. Colorado College and Brown en route to the the Bank One Badger Showdown title this past week at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisc. Haydar was named the tournament Most Valuable Player for his efforts.
Haydar posted a career-high 3-3-6 in the championship game vs. Brown, which was his fourth hat trick of his career and his second of the season. Haydar leads the nation and Hockey East in points (44), goals (18), assists (26) and points per game (2.44). Haydar is currently in the midst of a 10-game point streak, which dates back to the Nov. 17 game vs. Providence. During that time Haydar has scored 31 points and he has scored 24 points in his last seven games.
Haydar is currently seventh on UNH's all-time scoring list with 89-98-187 in 136 games. Haydar's 44 points this season has moved his up the list 20 spots since the beginning of the year...Haydar needs five points to tie Bob Gould for the sixth spot on the all-time list, Gould recorded 91-101-192 in 135 games
Haydar has scored three points or more in nine games and has recorded at least one point in 15 of UNH's 18 games...Haydar has recorded 16 points in six games vs. nationally ranked teams this season. Haydar has been named MVP of two regular season tournaments -- the Bank One Badger Showdown and the Dodge Dealers of New England Conference Classic. Haydar has won Hockey East Player of the Week honors on three occasions this year and was named Player of the Month for November.
UNH is currently 13-3-2 overall and in first place in Hockey East at 6-1-2. UNH is currently ranked third in the nation in offense at 4.67 goals per game and on the power play the 'Cats are fifth in the country at 28.9%.
The Wildcats return to action at home on Thursday, January 3rd vs. Yale University at the Whittemore Center. Game time is 7 p.m.
