TORONTO, Ontario — Sophomore forward Sean Collins (Reading, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was taken in the NHL Draft on Sunday that was held at the Air Canada Centre. The Colorado Avalanche took Collins with the 289th pick in the ninth round. Collins, a 5-9, 177-pound forward, tallied 20 goals and 25 assists for 45 points in his freshman season at UNH.




WAKEFIELD, Mass — The Hockey East Association has announced the selection of the All-Academic Team for the 2001-2002 season. Senior forward David Busch (Toronto, Ont.), freshman forward Ed Caron (Hudson, N.H.) and senior goaltender Tim Collins (Lebanon, N.H.) of University of New Hampshire were named to the team for earning a 3.0 GPA or higher in both semesters of competition.

Michael Hutchins (Wolfeboro, N.H.), Mark Kolanos (Calgary, Alberta), Andrew Leach (Altamont, N.Y.), Jeff Pietrasiak (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Brian Yandle (Milton, Mass.) have all been accepted to the University of New Hampshire for the fall semester of 2002.

PAUL, Minn. - Senior captain Darren Haydar (Milton, Ont.) of the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was named one of three finalists Monday for the Hobey Baker Award given to the outstanding player in college hockey. Senior defenseman Jordan Leopold of the University of Minnesota and Mark Hartigan, a junior forward from St. Cloud State University, are the other two finalists. WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior forward Jim Abbott (Mars, Penn.) scored his second goal of the game with 2:39 remaining to break a 3-3 tie and lift the University of New Hampshire into the 2002 Frozen Four with a 4-3 victory over Cornell on Sunday at the Worcester Centrum Centre.

ORONO, Maine — Niko Dimitrakos (Somerville, Mass.) scored a goal and added two assists to lead the University of Maine ice hockey team to a 6-3 victory over the University of New Hampshire in a Hockey East showdown Friday night at Alfond Arena. Maine improves to 16-7-4, 10-3-2 in Hockey East play while UNH falls to 19-5-2, 11-3-2 in conference play. The Black Bears scored four power play goals, while sophomore Todd Jackson (Cortland, N.Y.) dished out three assists.

The University of New Hampshire men's hockey team moved up two spots to No.4 in both national polls with wins over Colorado College, 5-2 and Brown, 11-3 at the Bank One Badger Showdown in Milwaukee, Wisc. The No. 4 ranking matches the highest that UNH has been in the poll all season, the last time the 'Cats were ranked fourth was Dec. 3rd coming off wins over Boston College and Maine. The Wildcats are the highest ranked Hockey East team in the poll and are one of six teams in the nation with 13 wins or more. UNH is currently 13-3-2 overall and 6-1-2 in Hockey East.
