WAKEFIELD, Mass. - University of New Hampshire junior goaltender Mike Ayers (Hingham, Mass.) was named Defensive Player of the Week by the Hockey East Association on Monday.
Ayers was awarded for his efforts in UNH's only game on the week, a 6-3 victory over Hockey East opponent Providence College on Saturday night. Ayers stopped all 15 shots in the final stanza, and 37 of 40 overall. This is Ayers' third defensive player of the week award on the season with the others coming on Oct. 21 and Nov. 25.
Ayers has recorded a 13-4-2 record overall and, with the win over Providence, improved to 8-2-1 in the conference. Ayers ranks third in Hockey East with a 2.00 goals against average and a .931 save percentage. Overall, Ayers has recorded a 1.99 GAA, which ranks him sixth in the nation, and a fifth-ranked .932 save percentage.
The Wildcats return to action Wednesday, January 15 at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester to compete for the RiverStone Trophy vs. intrastate rival Dartmouth College. The game starts at 7 p.m.
