WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Junior goaltender Mike Ayers (Hingham, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was named Defensive Player of the Week by the Hockey East Association on Monday afternoon.

Ayers, in two games last week vs. Boston University, stopped 75 of 80 shots by the Terriers for a .938 save percentage. He recorded his fifth shutout of the season in the 3-0 win against BU on Saturday night at the Whittemore Center to tie the UNH single-season record previously held by Ty Conklin (2000-2001).

Ayers currently owns a 16-5-3 record in 24 starts this year with a 1.99 GAA and a .932 save percentage. He is currently tied for the NCAA lead in shutouts and ranks third in GAA, save percentage and minutes played.

The Wildcat men's hockey team returns to action Saturday, Feb. 1 vs. the University of Maine. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, N.H. and the game can be seen live on WMUR-TV (Channel 9).
