BRISTOL, Conn. - The NCAA Div. I men's hockey selection committee announced that the No. 1 seed University of New Hampshire men's hockey team will face No. 4 seed St. Cloud State in the first round of the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Friday, March 28th. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Worcester Centrum Centre in Worcester, Mass.
The Wildcats (25-7-6 overall, 15-5-4 HE) head into the NCAA tournament with a 10-game unbeaten streak owning a 7-0-3 record during that time. UNH automatically qualified for the NCAA Tournament winning its second consecutive Hockey East Tournament Championship on Saturday, March 15th in a 1-0 overtime win over Boston University at the FleetCenter in Boston, Mass.
The University of New Hampshire is making its 13th all-time appearance in the NCAA tournament and its ninth under head coach Dick Umile. UNH is 2-2-0 all-time in the NCAA Tournament at the Worcester Centrum Centre, including their last game, a 4-3 win over Cornell University on March 24th, 2002. Friday's game will mark the first all-time meeting between New Hampshire and St. Cloud.
The Huskies of St. Cloud State enter the tournament with a 17-15-5 overall record and a 12-11-5 record in WCHA play. St. Cloud finished in sixth place with 29 points in the WCHA regular-season standings. The Huskies last NCAA appearance was last season in a 4-2 loss to Michigan in the first round on March 22, 2002. St. Cloud owns a 1-3-1 record in their last five games and lost their first round WCHA playoff series with Minnesota-Duluth two weeks ago. St. Cloud has never won a game in the NCAA Tournament with a 0-3-0 mark in three appearances.
The winner of the New Hampshire/St. Cloud game will face the winner of the Boston University/Harvard game in the Northeast regional final on Saturday, March 29th at 8 p.m. at the Worcester Centrum Centre. The winner of the regional final advances to the Frozen Four at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, N.Y. on Thursday, April 10th.
